Week 2
Hunting and Gathering
and Braintanning Deer Hides

A week of hunting and gathering, Arizona style. Drawing upon documented aboriginal hunting methods and tools, students will make their own finely-crafted hunting implements such as rabbit stick and primitive bows. We will also spend considerable time learning the ancient art of animal tracking including track id, gait interpretation, scat analysis, and field signs.

Braintanning Deer Hides

At the end of the week we will delve into the art of braintanning deer hides which we will continue on with throughout the semester. We will cover both wet and dry scrape methods along with how to make rawhide, moccasins, shirts, and leather pouches. Use of the whole animal will be covered including how to process sinew (tendon) for use in sewing, how to make bone points, awls, and needles, and how to make jerky.
