Week 1: Fundamental Bushcraft Skills

The first week introduces you to the core survival skills that form the foundation for wilderness living and which comprise the daily skills that will be used throughout the entire course.

Topics covered: 

~ Knife use & safety 
~ Proper use of the ax & saw 
~ Knife & ax sharpening methods 
~ Firecraft- fire safety, wood selection, bow-drill, hand-drill, flint & steel, modern methods, optics, wet-weather skills, signal
fires, techniques for extinguishing a fire. 
~ Sheltercraft - leanto, wickiup, debris hut, tarp shelters, the super shelter, weaving mats from cattails, coal-beds, snow shelters,
proper use of the canvas tent & woodstove. 
~ Dressing for the outdoors & clothing considerations 
~ Water location & purification methods along with human water requirements 
~ Useful knots & lashing methods 

Survival Students enjoying the process of learning to carve while sitting at a campfire after a hard day in the wilderness learning survival skills.
~ Traditional wilderness cooking 
~ Coal-burning bowls & spoons 
~ Edible plants 
~ Medical and first-aid concerns  
~ Backcountry hygiene & sanitation
~ Construction of large Hogan earth shelter
